In its initial analogue format this was probably a bit more useful to the reader of the day, in that you would have been able to cut the pieces out and play a game of chess with it.
This is of course entirely unneccesary as most people are now quite capable of having a game of chess in their heads. Having a chess board to look at to focus the mind is still quite useful however, so go ahead.
